Happiness is a long term state of mind. What we all really do from hour to hour, minute to minute, is look for ways to get high. For my friend, Tom, it's hiking and writing about it, a healthy way to go. No regrets the next day. I thought about this when I was editing my book and was working on describing the high of being on stage with the Downchild Blue's band. I noticed that the price was hard work to get to where I could play bass well enough to be there. One of my favorite highs, the peaceful, heroin like, love connection, exacted a heavy price in pain. Cocaine - loved to sail along, worries gone, feeling I could do anything I set my mind to. But the crash the next day - brutal. Comfort food, alcohol, are temporary fixes and I'm so vain, the ensuing weight gain is just not worth it. I've met a few people who exercise once or twice every day because their favorite high is endorphins and a positive body image. I need to explore that option a little more. Drug addicts pay the heaviest price of all. They give up family, friends and any kind of long term financial security.
You can also look at getting high as the absence of pain. But isn't it really the same when you think about it? What I need to do is be aware of my need to be pain free (or high) for awhile and the cost associated with it. Yesterday, I used food and drink. Today, I don't feel so good.
